Websites- Cloud: Global Pop-ups and Triggers

Automatic pop-ups are a powerful way to engage website visitors with timely messages, promotions, or alerts. These pop-ups can be triggered based on user behavior and configured to appear under specific conditions.

Accessing the Pop-Up Manager

Begin by navigating to the top left menu (three lines). From the sidebar, select Pop-Ups and Alerts. If no pop-ups have been created yet, scroll to the bottom and click Add New Pop-Up (the blue button in the lower left hand corner). Provide a title for the pop-up and select Save Changes.

Once saved, options to Edit, Duplicate, Preview, or Delete the pop-up will appear. Alternatively, selecting Pop-Ups and Alerts again will display all existing pop-ups. A yellow dot next to a pop-up indicates it is still in draft mode and not yet published.

Editing and Styling the Pop-Up

Click Edit to begin customizing the pop-up. Choose between designing a pop-up from scratch or selecting a pre-made template. For example, a “Black Friday” template can be repurposed for a “Valentine’s Day” promotion by updating the text and expiration date.

Setting Triggers and Conditions

Automatic pop-ups require two key configurations:

  • Trigger: Defines when the pop-up appears.
  • Condition: Defines where the pop-up appears.

To configure these, open the Pop-Up Settings in the top-right corner and select Display Conditions. By default, three conditions are applied:

  • On Page Load with a delay of 1 second.
  • Condition set to appear on All Pages.

This setup ensures the pop-up appears one second after any page is loaded.

Previewing and Publishing

After configuring the trigger and condition, save the changes and switch the status from Draft to Published. Use the Preview option to test the pop-up. Upon page load, the pop-up should appear as configured.

Exploring Additional Triggers

Cloud Websites offers several trigger options:

  • On Click
  • After Inactivity (measured in seconds)
  • On Page Exit Intent
  • On Scroll (e.g., at 60% scroll depth)

For example, setting a scroll trigger at 60% will display the pop-up once a user scrolls past that point on the page. Multiple triggers can be stacked to ensure the pop-up appears under various user behaviors.

Managing Display Frequency

During development, the “Trigger Pop-Up Only Once” setting is disabled to allow repeated testing. However, once the pop-up is finalized and published, enabling this setting is recommended to avoid frustrating users with repeated pop-ups.

Configuring Conditions

Conditions determine where the pop-up appears. While the default is All Pages, it can be customized to:

  • Specific system pages (e.g., maintenance or coming soon)
  • Other pop-ups and alerts
  • Stories, blocks, categories
  • Individual pages

Pop-ups can also be excluded from specific pages. For example, on a multi-page site, a pop-up can be set to appear on all pages except one or two by adding an exclusion condition.
